Re: HDR -> SDR conversion
In the case of HDRTools, YV12 is YUV420P16. I know it's not usually. The source is 4:2:0 so I can't grasp how it looks much better when ending in 4:4:4, looks just like madVR but madVR says 4:2:0 As for the banding, I don't think there's a difference between 8 bit and higher as long as there's dithe...

Re: HDR -> SDR conversion
I'm in favor of just having the option to output as YUV420P16 too, it might be affecting the sharpness as well, from tests with HDRTools. Build from latest code change and example script: FFVideoSource("sample5.mkv", colorspace="YUV420P10") ConvertBits(16).ConvertYUVtoXYZ(Color=0,OutputMode=1).Conve...

Re: HDR -> SDR conversion
When I refresh in AvsPmod (so it does all the processing again and outputs the same frame), the image isn't identical as it was before. Which is supposed to be expected? I just tested it again on madVR and it seems indeed to be caused by the setting "restore details in compressed highlights", which ...

Re: HDR -> SDR conversion
You're right, though not everyone likes using SDR as "source" for HDR tonemapped content. Neither look like SDR in terms of colors, in scenes where red is prominent. What's objectively different though, is the level of details retained in those high saturation/hue areas. They seem to get blurred and...

Re: HDR -> SDR conversion
Yes it does blend better, but then the color is not quite right. It's more orange with saturation instead of a dark purplish red like it is already without adjusting saturation. Made this to show more clearly. 1.7 is without saturation adjustment. comparison2.png To me, there's a definite desaturati...

Re: HDR -> SDR conversion
BTW, why do you find the sat adjustment not helpful? It's not that the sat parameter isn't good, it's just not enough to get colors close to v1.4 and madVR even with sat=1.25. Also the issue seems to affect only red, the rest looks just as good. So I'm thinking it's more related to the new Reinhard...

Re: HDR -> SDR conversion
v1.7 and roll doesn't seem to have the desired effect.. The colors don't seem to be changing, it's just getting brighter. Since switching to Reinhard, the contrast has been off as well. Everything looks duller, more grey. Order: v1.4 | v1.7 light=500 roll=0.5 | madVR https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/d7/da...

Re: HDR -> SDR conversion
Looks like that confirms what I noticed, reds aren't as saturated/deep as they should be. Even 1.4 was better I think, though it has a ton of hue shifts. I tried increasing saturation but it didn't get as deep of a red hue. In order: v1.4 light=200 peak=2.0 | v1.6 light=200 tm=0.90 | madVR latest te...

Re: HDR -> SDR conversion
Unfortunately madVR is closed source, though I think madshi had intentions to make plugins from the algorithms like SSIM downscaler, tonemapping. It runs as a rendering engine for media players like MPC-BE, so it does much more than tonemapping but there's nothing for AviSynth so it's a totally diff...

Re: HDR -> SDR conversion
:bravo: It looks good for the most parts and the results are pretty good :) Though now I'm mostly picking at small imperfections I can notice against other algorithms. I used the madVR settings people seem to agree on for default, somewhere in this discussion: https://www.avsforum.com/forum/24-digit...

Re: HDR -> SDR conversion
:hat: It looks much better at handling highlights, plus the "tm" parameter is great. Noticed some differences with v1.4 again, at this point I compare against madVR but it's getting harder to tell which is supposed to be "correct" Screenshots in order: v1.4 light=250, v1.5 light=250 tm=0.90, madVR 2...

Re: HDR -> SDR conversion
My bad, I thought it was obvious, the lighting is all weird on the window side. The plain white looks like saturation was applied to it and luminance dropped completely. https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/d3/75/KxYiRRse_t.png Sample: https://mega.nz/#!sVtAnAIQ!lOOwvKGOWy-ltqhafsNLeT1GvIaI9VBHfY9LyzWQmLk Scr...

Re: HDR -> SDR tonemapping
Ideally saturation should only be adjusted for around highlights that cause these very saturated colors, as overall the default saturation is good.

Re: HDR -> SDR tonemapping
I'm guessing he's comparing with the SDR version (from a SDR mastered Bluray). The center of the highlight (luma around 235) is wider with default settings, so "overblown". Either that or 235 is too high? I don't know. Mobius' peak setting does help because it doesn't affect the overall brightness, ...

Re: HDR -> SDR tonemapping
In order: peak=3, HDRTools tonemap
Regarding dmcs' issue, I guess peak=2 would fix the overblown highlight. That's usually a value that works well.
I just derailed from the initial problem with the "contouring" issue, sorry for that.

Re: HDR -> SDR tonemapping
I guess it's the same issue as this post http://rationalqm.us/board/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=617&start=320#p8494 Looks good only at high nits, but increasing that affects the whole frame. Another comparison with peak=3 and HDRTools 2.png 3.png Though like said before HDRTools is more complicated to unde...

Re: HDR -> SDR tonemapping
I'm not sure if it's what you mean as clipping, but on the edges going from very bright light to green it looks like squares instead of a smooth transition/gradient.
Mostly noticeable at lower light like the light=160 screenshot, the one at 500 looks good.

Re: HDR -> SDR tonemapping
Old versions of madVR used to have a similar issue, fixed a while ago though. Took a screenshot from v.0.92.14 but madshi has been working on proper colors in highlights in the last few test builds, still waiting on a final decision. There's definitely some desaturation happening, in the past you co...

It looks good now, pretty much the same colors as HDRTools
Also where has Mobius been all this time? It's amazing the control you can have over highlights, which Hable didn't have
