Total encode/mux time: 78m17s

i7 2600 K unlocked to 43x

Total encode/mux time: 32m20s

Will that do?
Close enough--would have been nice to see the same program as encoded by each, but I'll take this as evidence that 2x can be expected, thank you kindly. I'll be getting a new i7 shortly!

BTW what does "unlocked to 43x" mean for your i7? Can you point me to a link-or-site that discusses this? Thanks!

That's what the "K" is for... it means that the multiplier is unlocked. The P67 (and later) chipsets allow you to set a maximum multiplier in the BIOS and the chipset does the rest. Drops down to 16x when not being used, rises to the maximum on all cores as a function of the load, the number of threads and the dissipated power. (The non-K versions only allow this on one core="Turbo Mode")

This link explains it far better than I ever could:

Many thanks clumpco, I didn't know any of that! I'll be back here in a few weeks with results from my new build! I hope! :)

The link is excellent, I have bookmarked and will be re-reading it again...

A lot of the replies in this thread compare CUDA vs VP decoding performance for MPEG2 streams, and sometimes CUDA wins.

Can CUDA decode H264/VC1 as well? If so, does CUDA on a high-end card ever beat VP?

Version 2041 allows you to select CUDA for AVC, MPEG2, or VC1 via the Decode_Modes INI file option.

OK, great news.

Do we have any idea about decoding performance of the high end cards when using CUDA for decoding AVC or VC1? I'm wondering if it might be worthwhile to spend extra to get, say a 560 or 570, or their equivalent in the upcoming 600 (or some say it will be called 700) series.

EDIT: I posted a new topic about this, as it isn't really the topic of this thread.
