[RESOLVED] Error: Failed to create video decoder & choosing graphics card

Post by x12z34 »

Hi all,

sorry to start of my first post with a question... but there is something that :bug: me

When I try opening a file in DGIndexNV, I get this error message
GPU decoder: Failed to create video decoder [2]. Exiting...
As far as I understand, this is because I have two graphics cards installed, one GTX570 and one GTX760
When I use Options -> List GPU devices, I get:
>0: "GeForce GTX 570 Rev. 2"
[omitted]
1: "GeForce GTX760"
[omitted]
As written here http://rationalqm.us/dgdecnv/dgdecnv.html, the support for GTX5xx (or older) isn't guaranteed, and it seems, that it really doesn't work :D
To me it seems that DGIndexNV chooses the GTX570 as primary graphics card and only uses the GTX70, when the other one is disabled...

I found somewhat of a workaround, and that is to temporarily disable the GTX570 in the device manager. But first, that's a hassle to do every time and second, that comes with the decided downside of 2 of my monitors not working during that time
Maybe I'm too blind to find it, but is there a switch to tell DGIndexNV which graphics card to use as the standard one?

h yeah, I nearly forgot: Win10 x64, DGIndexNV 2051x32, GTX570, GTX760

Thanks in advance

First question. why are you using version 2051? Please install the latest version for support.

Thanks for your answer.

I can't give you a good reason, why I didn't update. Lazyness, I think...

I just updated to v2052. Didn't change anything though. I still get that error message, as long as the GTX570 graphics cards isenabled

Thanks again for your time...

There are cracked 2051's in the wild, so I like to rule that out first. ;)

OK, try this: Set CUDA_Device=1 in your DGIndexNV.ini file.

I bow my head in shame

I had the notion, that this setting might have something to do with the solution.
it was set to CUDA_Device=255. I already tried to change it to 254, but that did not work

my thought-process was something like this:
1) it is set to 255 (binary 11111111)
2) it uses graphics card 0 (binary 00000000)
3) the chosen graphics card must be the "inverse" of the CUDA_Device value
4) so: lowering the value from 255 to 254 must therefore increase the index of the chosen card...
5) well... THAT didn't work...
it never occured to me that I could simply try to change it to 1...

Thanks again

You could have read the DGIndexNV user manual also, where this option is defined in Appendix F.

I'll just come back to my first post:
Maybe I'm too blind to find it [...]
