[RESOLVED] DGIndexNV and MKV

Post by Guest »

DGIndexNV can presently output a trimmed .ts file, however .ts files don't support chapters.
Would it be possible to add a feature to output trimmed .mkv files, which support chapters, if its not to much trouble.

It's not clear to me what you mean by "output trimmed .mkv files, which support chapters".

In any case, it would be a lot of work. And that functionality is likely already well handled by MKVToolnix, unless I am mistaken.

I don't rule out adding additional features for MKV, but you would have to develop the request much further, showing what you could gain over existing tools, to get me interested.

You are correct about MKVToolNIX.
I was just trying to take 1 step out of the workflow, minor step at that.
Its not worth the work involved
Thanks for answering
I was trying to find a way to create a trimmed file that retains chapters

Presently I create start and stop points for a project with DGIndexNV
Then I use the info in the dgi file to create cut points in mkv and remux
Just trying to, basically, automate that process
The trimmed ts file option works fine but ts doesn't support chapters, so I would have to extract and manually edit the files if I were to use it.
Its most likely not worth the effort bot thanks for responding

Still not fully clear here, gonca.

You start with an MKV with chapters, and you want to do Save Project and end up with multiple {DGI + demuxed audio}, one per chapter?

If so, it seems like a reasonable thing to do and it may be possible. If that is what you are seeking perhaps you can provide me with a suitable MKV to work with.

Sorry about that, my head is a little foggy because of a cold.
I take my movies and repackage them in a mkv container
I then remove the studio logos at the beginning and the credits at the end, hence the start and end points for the project.
I use the time info in the dgi file and manually enter it into MKVToolNix to create the trimmed mkv that I will work on
Your Output Trimmed TS file option is perfect to simplify all of this except that the ts container does not support chapter files, and if I use it the I would have to manually edit the chapter files so I could re mux them back in.

I think that this might be a lot of work just to eliminate 1 or 2 small steps

Getting closer. ;)

So you create this trimmed MKV that you will work on. But what work is that? Are you going to open the trimmed MKV in DGDecNV, save a project, etc? If so, why wouldn't we prefer to go straight to that end result?

That is correct
I then take the trimmed mkv and create a new dgi file for it
I then use the script created from the template, in DGIndexNV, and use NVEnc to compress them a bit.
When this is complete I transfer the file to a media box for streaming
The purpose of the trimming is simply to get rid of the studio logos and end credits

This exercise has made me think
The glitch in my workflow are the chapter files, which I have included as far as I can remember.
However, I don't recall ever using the chapter points when watching a movie.
I guess I got used to using them for gop boundaries, and it became a habit.
Maybe it is time to give up on something that I don't actually use anymore.
Don't want to become a chapter file horder ;)

Yup, my thinking was along those lines too. I'll mark this resolved but feel free to post again if you have any other ideas for improving MKV functionality.

I started my next physics paper. Gonna get in-your-face with the quantum mysterians. :wow:

Update on new workflow
Use eac3to, via command line, on the disc to see which mpls I want
Load that mpls into DGIndexNV and create a trimmed m2ts
Do what I need to do on file.
Realizing that the chapters were an unneeded/unused item simplified the workflow quite a bit
Thanks

Why do you need to make the intermediate trimmed TS?

Just to???
Yeah!
Great question. Wish I had an answer.
Thought of it... just a left over obsolete appendage from the chapter thingy. :)
MKVToolNix would correct the timestamps on the chapter file automatically.
Short answer is, I don't
Thanks, you just streamlined my process a little more :bravo:
