Mr gonca, you're a high class guy and you seem pretty knowledgeable. Gonna ask you a question.

Do you think it is low class to use the j-hook method of replacing components?

Also, do you have any advice on getting DG approved? I know Curly doesn't like me, so kinda gave up on that.

Cheesie but easy!

Just applied the first topcoat varnish. Will probably do at least 4-5 layers with 0000 steel wool and hand rubbing after each layer. That's how you get depth in the finish.

Don't get too anal about it. The cabinet is made from plywood and cheap solid wood. Make it presentable and be happy. This is not Buckingham Palace.

You mean like building a palace on the wrong side of the tracks? OK, I'm feelin' ya. A couple coats and Boris is your uncle.

The arisen-from-the-dead radio 2 has a much better speaker and the sound is deeper and richer. So I'm gonna put the radio 2 chassis into the refinished radio 1 cabinet. Mix and match to get the best possible result.

For the radio 2 cabinet, gonna make physical repairs and try to touch up the factory finish a bit, and that's all.

When I turned the radio 2 chassis upright I noticed some tears in the speaker cone. Hope I didn't make them! Anyway, I fixed them with gorilla fabric glue and coffee filter paper. Still sounds great.

When you do the hand-rubbing thing, you have to rub it down before it fully dries. The cabinet looks awesome even after one topcoat, but I'll do at least one more. Can't wait to get things put together.

I wanna restore an old TV next.

Thank you, DG.

Here is a shot of radio 2. I repaired the cabinet mechanically (joints had opened and Sherman was not confident about doing it). Sherman did the electrical restoration and touched up the cabinet with furniture sticks. Still need to replace the grille clothe one day and touch up the cream paint but it's the new office radio for now. I think you'll agree that the led solution is working great.

Will show you radio 1 after Sherman takes it apart and puts in the dial lamp diffuser that he forgot to install. Also after the Philco decal gets put on. Gonna use a large one in place of the original quite small one. Will probably do the same to radio 2 because as you can see below its decal is very small and faded, almost not visible.

Thank you, Sherman, for all your help! :salute:

I take back all the good things I said about you! And DG wouldn't let me add a fan. The extinguisher is always at hand here at DG. We have heat sensors and everything.

Sherman, while you've got the radio 2 chassis out, please replace the duct tape with proper solutions. This guy has to last another 75 years. Do not use duct tape for insulation or mechanical fixation. Thank you!

OK, the herringbone...I tried to use glue but it soaked through to the front of the fabric. The Stewart-Warner...I thought OK let's use double sided carpet tape. It was good at first but then slipped in and became all saggy. Then when I pulled it off it got destroyed. Maybe I need some help.
